Why Auth Matters for Your Lovable App
Authentication is the gatekeeper of your app. Done right, it's seamless. Done wrong, users bounce before they even see your product. Here's how to nail it in Lovable with Supabase.
Step 1: Enable Auth in Supabase
Before opening Lovable, go to your Supabase project dashboard:
- Navigate to Authentication → Providers
- Enable Email/Password
- Enable Google OAuth (you'll need Google Cloud credentials)
- Configure your site URL and redirect URLs
Step 2: The Lovable Auth Prompt
Use this exact prompt:
"Set up Supabase authentication with email/password signup and Google OAuth. Create these pages: /login, /register, /forgot-password. Use @supabase/ssr for session management. Create a ProtectedRoute component that checks auth state and redirects unauthenticated users to /login. Style auth pages with a centered card design, clean form fields, and proper error messages."
Step 3: Protected Routes
Lovable will generate the basic auth flow. Review the ProtectedRoute component:
- Show a loading spinner while checking auth state
- Redirect to /login if not authenticated
- Render children if authenticated
Step 4: Session Management
Supabase handles sessions automatically, but verify:
- Token refresh is working
- Logout clears the session properly
- Protected API calls include the auth token
Step 5: User Profiles
After auth works, prompt for user profiles:
"Create a user profile page at /profile. Allow users to update their name, avatar, and email preferences. Store profile data in a Supabase profiles table linked to auth.users."
Common Auth Mistakes
- Not handling the loading state — causes flicker
- Forgetting to protect API routes server-side
- Skipping email verification flow
- Not testing the password reset flow
